Mission:
To provide quality, relevant outreach and continuing education programs and services to the people of Texas.

Scope:
The Texas Agricultural Extension Service is a member of The Texas A&M University System. Texas A&M is part of the nationwide system of land-grant universities whose mission is teaching, research and extension. The Extension Service, with some 950 professional educators located at Texas A&M and at 12 district and 250 county offices, operates in a unique partnership with federal, state and county government to address the needs of local citizen. Extension education encompasses the broad areas of food and fiber systems, environment and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H and youth development, and communities.

Goals:
Extension's four state goals are the following:

Educate Texans to improve their health, safety, productivity and well-being.

Educate citizens to improve their stewardship of the environment and Texas' natural resources.

Educate Texans to make decisions that contribute to their economic security and to the state's economic prosperity.

Foster the development of responsible, productive and self-motivated youth and adults.

Educational Priorities:
education for 2000-2003 will focus on the following major areas based on citizen input through the Texas Community Futures Forum in each county in 1999:

Quality of Life in the Community
Economic Viability and Growth
Accessible, Quality Education for All Water and the Environment Strengthening Families, Developing Youth
Health Care and Facilities.

Programming Relevance:
Extension education targets the identified needs of Texans. County Extension Program Councils provide continuous input for local programs. Response teams have been organized in each county to address areas identified in the Texas Community Futures Forum. In addition, 19 statewide response teams composed of Extension and other agency people have been organized to target critical issues. The forums involved local and state agencies and organizations in an effort to develop a broad-based plan for addressing the needs of Texans in the years ahead.
